We love that Atlanta has made a concentrated effort to increase green space within the city and make it easy, accessible, and safe for families to enjoy. There's nothing better than being outside with my family of six, soaking up the sun. Every time we go for a walk and eat, we laugh and find somewhere tasty, unique and fun to eat. We know that being outside is more than just a good way to bond as a family, it can really feed our souls as well.
Here is a family-crafted list of outdoor destinations we love in metro Atlanta.
1. ATLANTA BELTLINE EASTSIDE TRAIL
It is located at 400 Park Drive NE in Atlanta, Georgia. 30306
The Historic Fourth Ward Park usually has free street parking. Krog Street Market, Ponce City Market, and Piedmont Park have paid parking. There is a trail starting at the corner of 10th Street and Monroe Drive.
An Atlanta BeltLine is a multiuse trail built on the tracks of a former rail line. It's become one of the city's most popular experiences since opening in 2005. With nearly 4 miles of unpaved trails and 11 miles of paved paths, Atlanta BeltLine is one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in the country. Upon completion, 22 miles of multi-use urban trails will weave together Atlanta's intown neighborhoods.
Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail
A wide, paved trail is full of serious bikers, hikers, stroller pushing parents, and teenagers on skateboards. Throughout the trail, you can find political and socially conscious graffiti art, as well as beautiful wildflowers and city views. Get to know the hippest and most diverse Atlantans. You can also take a stroll through the food halls at Krog Street Market or Ponce City Market to pick up a sweet treat or meal.
There are a wide variety of FREE classes and activities available on the BeltLine, including those offered virtually. My son took a skateboarding class and another learned how to ride a bicycle. Additionally, you can engage in yoga, bike tours, or pick-up soccer matches.
2. HISTORIC FOURTH WARD PARK
The address is 680 Dallas St. NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30303. 30308
On North Angier Avenue, Morgan Street, Garden Park Drive, Dallas Street, and Rankin Street, you can usually find street parking.
Historic Fourth Ward Park
On the site of the old Ponce de Leon amusement park is historic Fourth Ward Park. One block south of Ponce City Market, the park is connected to Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail. The park also includes a skate park as well as a splash pad, walking trails, and a playground. Admire some of the region's most impressive skateboarders and marvel at their finesse and skill. Attempt it if you dare with your own board.
ADA-compliant playgrounds are available throughout the park. Garden Park Drive and Morgan Street are connected by an ADA entrance ramp.
3. CHATTAHOOCHEE RIVER
Sandy Springs, Georgia, 8800 Roberts Drive. 30350
There is a $5 daily parking charge for each vehicle
Atlanta's Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is a cool place to visit. The Chattahoochee River may not be close to the ocean, but it has plenty of water fun to offer. A tubing or kayaking down river gives us the opportunity to shoot the hooch like a local. Next, walk or bike the shaded trails.
4. PACES MILL TRAIL
Located at 3444 Cobb Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30322. 30339
Car parking is $5 a day
The Paces Mill trail offers an exquisitely beautiful walk that isn't too strenuous. Located in North Buckhead, there is plenty of parking available. It's like walking through a secret garden in the middle of the city. Along the wide, paved path, you might see wild animals, birds and even colorful fish swimming in the Chattahoochee River's tributaries.
A great place for beginning bike riders is this mostly flat path. There are few sharp turns or narrow lanes, so it is generally uncrowded.
5. PIEDMONT PARK
Location: 400 Park Drive NE, Atlanta, GA 30322. 30306
The parking deck is paid, there is a gravel parking lot, and street parking is limited
Central Park is located in New York City. Chicago has Grant Park. And Atlanta Piedmont Park. That's why it's so historic and iconic. Midtown Park, the largest park in the city, covers 185 acres. For nearly two centuries, it has been the site of family gatherings. The community features a well-maintained tennis court, a swimming pool, a splash pad, two playgrounds, sand volleyball courts, ball fields and acres of green space.
Piedmont Park
My favorite part of the park is its history. In 1895, Booker T. Washington made his famous Atlanta Compromise speech at this exposition. An African American made it the first time he spoke to a racially mixed but separate audience in the South, and it defined post-Reconstruction racial relations in a way that remains debated today. It gives me pride to walk through the imposing stone archways and appreciate the sense of history most people are unaware of. Knowing that the park was previously off-limits to people like us, I smile whenever I see so many people enjoying it together.
